Dissertation Research

New Mandala’s Emerging Scholar Award | Deadline: September 6, 2024

With support from the Australian National University, through this initiative New Mandala aims to promote the dissemination of outstanding PhD research on Southeast Asia to a global readership, and build emerging scholars’ skills in drafting and editing their work to reach audiences beyond academia.

The program will award 15 successful applicants A$1,000 each to work with New Mandala’s editors to prepare a 3,000 word essay based on their doctoral research, which will be published at New Mandala in early 2025.

Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowship | October 30, 2024

Fellowship Details
Award: $42,000 base stipend for the fellowship year, plus up to $8,000 for project-related research, training, development, and travel costs. The award also provides a separate $2,000 stipend for external mentorship.
Tenure: one year beginning between July 1 and September 1, 2025.
Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS online fellowship administration system (http://ofa.acls.org ) no later than 9 PM Eastern Daylight Time, October 30, 2024.
Notifications will be sent via email by early April 2025.

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program | Deadline: Ongoing

Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant | Deadline: Ongoing

The Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant program funds doctoral or thesis research that advances anthropological knowledge. Our goal is to support vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of what it means to be human. There is no preference for any methodology, research location, topic, or subfield. The Foundation particularly welcomes proposals that integrate two or more subfields and pioneer new approaches and ideas.

The maximum Dissertation Fieldwork Grant is $25,000. Grants are nonrenewable. There is no limit to the duration of the grant, and applicants may request funding to cover distinct research phases (for example, two summers) if this is part of the research design. Wenner-Gren awards do not include funds to cover institutional overhead or any fees related to the administration of our grants and fellowships.

Application deadlines are May 1 (for project start dates between January 1 and June 30 of the following year) and November 1 (for project start dates between July 1 and December 31 of the following year). The application portal opens 2 months before the deadline. It takes us 6 months to complete the review process and arrive at a final decision.

Postdoc Funding: The Center for Asian Research-Arizona State University & ASU School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies | Deadline: Ongoing

The Center for Asian Research at Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar. The selected candidate will collaborate with ASU faculty in teaching and researching topics related to Asia and its global connections in a variety of capacities, including curriculum development, faculty workshops, and community engagement. The successful candidate will develop and teach one large-enrolling gateway course per semester centered on inter-Asian and interdisciplinary topics such as food, sustainability, culture, or fashion. The initial appointment is made on a fiscal year basis, as a full-time, one-year appointment with the possibility of a one-year renewal based upon satisfactory performance and availability of resources. This position is a non-tenure track, benefits-eligible appointment. This is a grant funded position, contingent on the availability of future grant funding

The John Fee Embree Endowed Scholarship | Deadline: TBA

The scholarship is earmarked to assist graduate students in anthropology or sociology (or other disciplines in the absence of anthropology or sociology applicants) who are concentrating their academic work on Southeast Asia related studies at UHM.
