The 1971 bombing of the Liberal Party election rally at Plaza Miranda remains one of the most controversial events in Philippine history. The Plaza Miranda bombing, and the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus that followed, was a critical step in the series of events that culminated in President Ferdinand Marcos’ imposition of martial law in 1972. This talk will examine the heated disputes over culpability and the continuing political relevance of the bombing.
