Pakatan Harapan: Pursuing Reforms Behind the Scenes
March 18, 2025 from 4:00pm HST
MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME
About the Hybrid Seminar
Pakatan Harapan, the Alliance of Hope, has championed reform for decades, governed Penang and Selangor since 2008, and helmed Malaysia’s federal government in two phases: May 2018 – February 2020, and from November 2022 until today. The ruling coalition, which continually hinges on the PH-UMNO pact, is mindful that it must deliver tangible benefits and govern with integrity and accountability. The state of reforms can be difficult to track, with short attention spans, rapid media cycles, and the flux of Malaysian politics. The headlines would suggest some economic and legislative achievements but an underwhelming record of reform by the Madani government.
Is there more progress beyond the spotlight? Are efforts underway that have yet to bear fruit? Is reform inhibited by political, governmental, or economic factors? What are the current sentiments and party dynamics in PKR and DAP, PH’s key component parties?
At this seminar, two emerging political leaders will shed light on these questions, drawing on their extensive experience in state legislatures and federal parliament, and various positions they have held in Cabinet, parliamentary committees, and government agencies.
