Learn to Play Javanese Gamelan this Fall!

Ever wanted to play in a traditional Indonesian orchestra? Join us this Fall for MUS 311H: Javanese Gamelan, a hands-on, entry-level course open to all students, faculty, and staff—no prior experience needed!
Javanese gamelan is a mesmerizing musical tradition from Central Java, performed in royal courts, villages, and at community celebrations. The ensemble includes bronze gongs and metallophones, drums, flutes, and strings, producing a rich, layered sound that’s both meditative and dynamic.
Students will learn:
- Melody, rhythm, and colotomic structure
- Basic theory and improvisation techniques
- Cultural and historical context of gamelan music
