Offered this summer, ASAN 491I (601) CRN 93126 – Women’s Rights in South Asia examines the historical and contemporary challenges faced by South Asian women, particularly those who have migrated to Southeast Asia. This course offers students a deep dive into gender-based violence, economic inequality, political participation, and legal mobilization across the region, with a focus on Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.

About the Instructor
Haider Rifaat, MA, is a Pakistani journalist and second-year PhD student in Political Science at UH Mānoa. Born in Fairfax, Virginia and raised in Islamabad, Rifaat brings a unique perspective shaped by his South Asian roots and commitment to advocacy for women and children.
