Solidarity Statement in Response to the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

March 28, 2025
The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UH CSEAS) expresses solidarity with the people of Myanmar and Thailand who were devastated by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake on Friday, March 28, 2025. This catastrophic event has left a trail of destruction and loss of life in both countries, especially in Myanmar, which already suffers from an ongoing civil war triggered by the 2021 military coup. Based on available data, the death toll in Myanmar is at least 144, with over 730 injured, while in Thailand, it killed at least 10 people, and 90 are missing. It is anticipated that casualties will increase.
CSEAS mourns the loss of life and the destruction caused by this earthquake disaster. Our hearts go out to the families of those affected, the communities in both Myanmar and Thailand, and the first responders who are working tirelessly under challenging conditions. We also call on the international community to provide aid and resources to those in need, especially in the hardest-hit areas, while ensuring that the provision of assistance is transparent and accountable.
With heartfelt concern,
University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Center for Southeast Asian Studies
