Pasts and Futures: Rethinking Asian Studies in the New Global Landscape

November 7-9, 2025 | Texas A&M University-San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas, USA

The 54th Annual Conference of the SouthWest Conference on Asian Studies (SWCAS) invites scholars to critically examine the evolving landscape of Asian Studies under the theme “Pasts and Futures: Rethinking Asian Studies in the New Global Landscape.” This conference aims to explore the intersections of historical legacies, contemporary challenges, and Asia’s role in shaping global futures.

Call for Proposals

SWCAS welcomes individual and panel proposals on all topics related to Asian Studies, with an emphasis on the following subthemes:

  • Asian historical narratives with global connections
  • Geopolitics and Asian futures
  • Cultural movements and Asian identities
  • Environmental issues and sustainability in Asia
  • Migration, diaspora, and transnationalism
  • Gender studies in Asia
  • Body and age in Asia
  • Asian Studies across the disciplines
  • Innovations in Asian Studies pedagogy
  • Teaching and researching Asian Studies in the SWCAS region (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana)

Special Presentation Format

The conference will primarily take place in person but will include a special presentation block for all-virtual panels. Priority for virtual presentations will be given to scholars based outside of the United States. In-person presenters are not eligible for virtual participation.

Student Awards and Travel Support

  • Graduate Student Paper Award: $200
  • Undergraduate Student Paper Award: $200
  • Travel Grants: Limited $100 travel grants for graduate students presenting in person.

To be considered for the student paper awards, submit your proposal by June 1, 2025, and email the full paper to swcas2025@gmail.com by October 1, 2025.

Submission Guidelines

  • Individual Paper Proposals: Include a paper title, 150-word abstract, presenter’s name, affiliation, e-mail, and mode of presentation (in-person or virtual).
  • Panel Proposals: Include a 200-word summary, paper titles, participants’ details, and mode of presentation (in-person or virtual).
