Call for Proposals: “Modernities, Mobilities, and Change” Dissertation Workshop

The Association for Asian Studies (AAS), with funding from the Henry Luce Foundation, invites applications for a dissertation workshop on “Modernities, Mobilities, and Change.” This two-day workshop will be held on May 30-31, 2025, in Kathmandu, Nepal, immediately preceding the AAS-in-Asia conference.

Workshop Overview

- Eligibility: Advanced doctoral students who have completed their research and are writing their dissertations

- Dr. Ali Raza (Lahore University of Management Sciences) – Historian of South Asia
- Dr. Arjun Guneratne (Macalester College) – Anthropologist specializing in Nepal and Sri Lanka
Workshop Theme
The workshop focuses on environment and climate change, race and caste, ethnicity and nationalism, and politics within the contexts of transnationalism and regional histories. Proposals may cover topics from early modern Asia to the present and should engage with either the social sciences or humanities.
Workshop Structure & Expectations
- Participants will submit one dissertation chapter (preferably the introduction) for intensive critique from faculty and peers.
- Each student will receive detailed interdisciplinary feedback from two faculty members.
- Participation is limited to 10 students to ensure meaningful engagement.
- Applicants must have defended their dissertation prospectus before applying.
Financial Support
Selected participants will receive a grant covering:
- Lowest economy class airfare
- AAS-in-Asia conference registration fee
- Shared lodging during the workshop
- Meals during the workshop
Application Requirements
All materials must be submitted via the AAS application portal by February 14, 2025.
Required documents:
- Letter of recommendation from an academic advisor (sent directly to grants@asianstudies.org)
- Three-page dissertation proposal addressing:
- Research problem and question
- Relevant literature
- Research methods and significance
- Chapter outline (1-2 sentences per chapter)
- One completed dissertation chapter
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) – Maximum 3 pages
