Call for Participation: Anti/Authoritarian Southeast Asian Studies Graduate Workshop

The Justice in Southeast Asia Lab (JSEALab) invites graduate students to participate in the Anti/Authoritarian Southeast Asian Studies Graduate Workshop at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, from April 24–26, 2025.

This workshop will bring together emerging scholars, faculty, and keynote speakers to critically engage with the complex dynamics of authoritarianism, power, and resistance across Southeast Asia and its diasporas. Through roundtable discussions, presentations, and interactive exchanges, participants will explore empirical, theoretical, and practical dimensions of scholarship during times of political repression and societal resistance.

Keynote Speakers

  • Erik Martinez Kuhonta (McGill University)
  • Tuong Vu (University of Oregon)
  • Tyrell Haberkorn (University of Wisconsin-Madison)

Participants will:

  • Submit a five-page (1500-word) reflection on their work before the workshop.
  • Read and engage with peer reflections to prepare for discussions.
  • Participate in roundtables and interactive presentations.

Eligibility

  • Open to graduate students pursuing a PhD whose research addresses social justice in Southeast Asia or among its diasporas.
  • Applicants may be in the coursework or writing stage of their studies.

Funding Support

  • Shared accommodation for participants from outside Wisconsin.
  • Limited travel funding available.
