The School of Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics at SOAS University of London is calling for papers for the upcoming graduate student conference, “Flows and Currents in South East Asia”, to be held on July 4, 2025.

Areas of Focus

We welcome interdisciplinary proposals that engage with regional flows and currents across South East Asia. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Literary Writing: Regional literature, narrative traditions, and creative expressions.
  • Book & Print Culture: Publishing practices, manuscript histories, and material circulation.
  • Anthropology & Cultural Studies: Ethnographic research and cultural dynamics.
  • Political Economy & Theory: Governance, economic structures, and regional politics.
  • Media & Popular Culture: Film, television, music, and digital platforms in South East Asia.
  • Languages & Linguistics: Linguistic diversity, language policies, and sociolinguistic studies.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submit a 250-word abstract describing your proposed presentation.
  • Include a 100-word biographical note with your submission.

  • Call Opens: January 6, 2025
  • Submission Deadline: April 4, 2025
  • Notification of Acceptance: May 2025

Participation Details

  • The conference will be in-person only at SOAS University of London.
  • Free registration for all participants.
  • Target Audience: PhD students and early-career researchers with a focus on Southeast Asia.
  • Online participation may be considered in exceptional cases at the discretion of the organisers.
  • Please note: Travel and accommodation funding is not available.
