General Description

The Eighth International Conference on Lao Studies (ICLS 8) will be held from September 11-14, 2025, at the Centre of Asian and Transcultural Studies, Heidelberg University, Germany. Co-organized by the Institute of Anthropology at Heidelberg University and the Center for Lao Studies (CLS), this conference aims to promote Lao Studies by providing an international forum for scholars to present and discuss various aspects of Lao Studies.

Conference Theme

The Time and Space of Laos: Neighbors and Transformations
This theme explores the complex relationships and transformations within Laos and its interactions with neighboring countries and global communities. It addresses diachronic dimensions of change, tradition, and geopolitical development, and examines the spatial dynamics of Laos from local to global scales. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Urbanization and Development
  • Cross-border Trade and Interactions
  • Identity Politics and Ethnic Relations
  • Nature Conservation and Environmental Change
  • Internet-Based Communications and Networking

Call for Abstracts

Submissions are open for:

  • Individual Papers: Papers will be grouped into thematic panels by the organizing committee.
  • Organized Panels: Composed of 3-4 scholars presenting formal papers, with 1 or 2 discussants.
  • Roundtables and Workshops: Open formats for collaborative discussions and exchanges.
  • Exhibits and Performances: Cultural showcases relevant to Lao Studies.
