The Inya Institute is accepting applications for a Fellow to lead the Summer 2025 Research & Mentoring Fellowship, which supports the study of Myanmar’s borderlands. This fellowship will provide an opportunity for an experienced scholar to mentor Myanmar junior researchers in a structured online research development program.

Fellowship Responsibilities

The selected Fellow will:

  • Lead online workshops with six groups of up to three Myanmar junior researchers.
  • Mentor participants on research design, methodology, and data collection (June 30 – July 4).
  • Conduct one-on-one mentoring sessions on research development (July 7 – August 1).
  • Guide research on Myanmar’s borderlands, focusing on topics such as:
    • Colonial knowledge and ethno-history
    • Natural resources and environmental challenges
    • Border trade, migration, and networks
    • Governance, public health, and refugee relief
    • Education and economic development in border areas

Fellowship Benefits

  • Stipend: $5,800 for teaching and mentorship
  • Travel & Accommodation Covered: International airfare, ground transportation, lodging, meals, and internet costs
  • Research Opportunities: The Fellow may engage in personal research during non-mentoring hours
  • Conference Participation: The Fellow and Myanmar researchers will be invited to present at the 2026 International Interdisciplinary Conference on Myanmar’s Borderlands (IICMB)

Eligibility

  • Open to postdoctoral scholars whose research aligns with Myanmar’s borderlands.
  • Eligible applicants:
    • U.S. citizens with a PhD from a U.S. or overseas university (awarded in the last 12 years).
    • Foreign nationals with a PhD from a U.S. university (awarded in the last 12 years).

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Completed application form, including a 1,200-word statement detailing past or current research on Myanmar’s borderlands.
  2. Proposed Work Schedule for conducting online mentoring sessions.
  3. Itemized Budget with a Budget Narrative (including allowable travel and living costs).
  4. Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  5. One Academic Reference Letter (to be submitted directly to the Inya Institute).
