Call for Applications: SEAREG Pre-Dissertation Fellowship

Application Deadline: February 14, 2025

The Southeast Asia Research Group (SEAREG) is accepting applications for the SEAREG Pre-Dissertation Fellowship. This fellowship supports social science PhD students conducting exploratory research in Southeast Asia to gain the advanced contextual knowledge necessary for developing high-quality dissertation proposals and competitive applications for external funding.

Fellowship Award

Recipients will receive up to $5,000 to support their research, made possible through a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.

Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to graduate students in good academic standing who have completed their first or second year of a social science PhD program in the U.S. or Canada, regardless of nationality or citizenship. Preference will be given to students in political science, economics, and sociology, though applications from related fields such as public policy, history, and anthropology will also be considered. PhD candidates are eligible, though priority will be given to those who have not yet defended their dissertation prospectus.

Fellowship Expectations

Awardees are expected to spend a minimum of five weeks in Southeast Asia. This time can be spent in a single country or across multiple countries based on research needs. The fellowship is not intended to support introductory language courses or courses taken outside Southeast Asia. Successful applicants should demonstrate a commitment to the region through prior language acquisition. Advanced language study tied directly to research goals or essential language instruction unavailable outside Southeast Asia may be considered for support.
