Building Connections Through Culture: Highlights from the CSEAS Spring 2025 Gathering
Last Friday, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) and the Ethnomusicology Program hosted a Spring 2025 Gathering at the Ethnomusicology Courtyard at UH Mānoa. The event brought together students, faculty, and researchers with a shared interest in Southeast Asian focus including cultures, languages, traditions, and sociopolitical issues. Approximately 70 students, faculty, and CSEAS partners participated in the event.
A Night of Ethnomusical Music, Food, and Community
One of the highlights of the evening was a live performance by the Kulintang Ensemble, filling the courtyard with the rhythmic and melodic sounds of traditional Filippino gong music. Attendees also enjoyed an incredible spread of potluck dishes, showcasing the diverse culinary traditions of the region.
The event wasn’t just about food and music—it was also about building connections! CSEAS Outreach Coordinator’s ice-breaker bingo was a hit, helping participants meet new people in a fun and interactive way.
Why the Gathering Matter?
CSEAS gatherings provide a unique space for students and faculty to connect beyond the classroom, offering opportunities for networking, cultural exchange, and community-building. Whether you’re a student exploring Southeast Asian Studies, a faculty member conducting regional research, or simply someone interested in the rich traditions of Southeast Asia, these events offer an informal and welcoming environment to engage with the SEA community.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event a success! Stay tuned for more CSEAS events in the coming months.
