Scholarship Opportunities for Southeast Asian Studies – February & March 2025 Deadlines

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is pleased to announce several scholarship opportunities for students with an interest in Southeast Asian and Pacific Islands studies. Applications are currently open for the following scholarships:

1. The John Fee Embree Endowed Scholarship

Application Deadline: Friday, February 15, 2025
Apply through: STAR

This scholarship honors the late Asia scholar, Professor John Fee Embree, who served as Professor of Anthropology at UH Mānoa and contributed significantly to Southeast Asian Studies.

Basic Criteria:

  • UH Manoa
  • School of Pacific and Asian Studies
  • Japanese Studies or Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, who are concentrating in the disciplines of anthropology and sociology.
  • Full-time
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5.
  • Graduate
  • Japanese Studies or Southeast Asian Studies in the disciplines of anthropology and sociology.
  • Graduate students in anthropology or sociology concentrating on Southeast Asian Studies at UH Mānoa.
  • Non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

2. PPSEAWA Hawaii Scholarship 2025

Application Deadline: Friday, February 15, 2025
Apply through: STAR

This scholarship is open to lower-division undergraduate students who demonstrate an interest in Pacific Islands or Southeast Asian Studies at UH Mānoa.

Basic Criteria:

  • UH Manoa.
  • Pacific Islands or Southeast Asian Studies.
  • May also be awarded to students pursuing studies in Humanities.
  • Full-time.
  • Some financial need shall be a criterion in making this award although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.UndergraduateHawaii residentsFreshman or sophomore with preference given to freshmen.

Scholarship funds can be used for:

  • Tuition, books, fees, and other educational expenses.

3. PPSEAWA-Hawaii Miriam Deisseroth Scholarship 2025

Application Deadline: Friday, February 15, 2025
Apply through: STAR

This scholarship supports lower-division undergraduate students who have a strong interest in Pacific Islands or Southeast Asian Studies at UH Mānoa.

Basic Criteria:

  • UH Manoa.Pacific Islands or Southeast Asian Studies.
  • May also be awarded to students pursuing studies in the Humanities.
  • Full-timeSome financial need shall be a criterion in making this award although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines.
  • 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Undergraduate
  • State of Hawaii residents.
  • Freshman or sophomore with preference given to freshmen.

4. Albert D. Moscotti Fellowship for Graduate Studies of Southeast Asia

Application Deadline: Friday, March 7, 2025, 11:59 PM HST
Award Amount: Varies

This fellowship, established by Albert D. Moscotti in honor of his parents, Anthony and Amy Moscotti, supports full-time, classified graduate students at UH Mānoa in the arts, humanities, or social sciences with a focus on Southeast Asia. Non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

Eligible Uses of Funds:

  • Attendance at professional conferences to present or participate as a discussant.
  • Travel expenses for field research contributing to scholarly work.

Application Requirements:

  • Narrative Essay: 1,000-character description of academic goals and relevance of the proposed activity.
  • Budget: Detailed breakdown including travel, accommodations, meals, and registration fees.
  • Documentation: Conference invitation or departmental approval, flight itinerary, and pricing.
  • Recommendation: Faculty advisor or program advisor contact details.
