About the Film

“In Shackles” portrays the harrowing journey of a 34-year-old Pakistani woman whose life has been shaped by forced marriage, sexual violence, and societal challenges. The film sheds light on these critical issues while aiming to inspire meaningful change in the discourse surrounding women’s rights and social justice in Pakistan.

In the words of the director, Haider Rifaat:

“I wanted to not only depict challenges facing a low-income earning, uneducated Pakistani woman, but to highlight societal problems affecting everyone, including religious hypocrisy, impact of family conditioning on children, culture of silence surrounding violence, and legalistic challenges and gaps.”
