Recording Available: Lutung and the Bees, Balinese Shadow Play

Lutung and the Bees (Balinese Shadow Play)

A traditional Balinese shadow play created and performed by the Jaga Alam Ensemble under the direction of master artist Made Moja. This performance is the third show of the JAGA ALAM project. “Jaga Alam” means “taking care of nature” in Indonesian. Its mission is to create environmentally- themed traditional plays for children and families.

We are excited to announce that the recording of Lutung and the Bees is now available on our website! This captivating Balinese shadow puppet play (wayang kulit) was performed by the Jaga Alam Ensemble under the direction of master artist Made Moja. Part of the Jaga Alam project—meaning “taking care of nature” in Indonesia—this initiative uses the arts to promote environmental awareness and foster a sense of stewardship for our planet.

Lutung and the Bees follows the journey of Lutung, a monkey who acts as a messenger in a forest community facing environmental threats like deforestation, habitat loss, and pollution. Through intricate puppetry and compelling storytelling, this performance brings traditional Balinese arts together with a powerful message about the importance of protecting our natural world.

This performance was held at the East-West Center as part of the Jaga Alam project, coordinated by Dr. Kirstin Pauka in collaboration with the East-West Center Arts Program. The project emphasizes themes that resonate across Southeast Asia and the Pacific, such as biodiversity loss, plastic pollution, and coastline erosion.

Experience the beauty of Balinese wayang kulit and let it inspire you to make a difference. Visit our website to watch the full recording and join us in reflecting on our responsibility to the environment!
