About the CAPA Speaker Series

The Careers in Asia-Pacific Affairs (CAPA) Speaker Series was established in Fall 2023, bringing multiple talks featuring speakers from diverse professions. The series has been a platform for professionals to share their experiences and advice with students interested in working in the Asia-Pacific region.

In October 2023, the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Center for Southeast Asian Studies (UH CSEAS), in collaboration with the School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS), the East Asia National Resource Center, the Center for Pacific Island Studies (CPIS), the Center for Indo-Pacific Affairs (CIPA), and the Department of Asian Studies, launched the CAPA initiative. The initiative is funded by Title VI through the U.S. Department of Education’s International and Foreign Language Education office.

The 2023-24 CAPA series featured a wide range of topics, including U.S. diplomacy, careers in think tanks, foreign policy, and environmental concerns.

Background of the CAPA Initiative

The Careers in Asia-Pacific Affairs (CAPA) initiative is supported by a 4-year grant from the International Foreign Language and Area Studies Office of the U.S. Department of Education, which funds UH CSEAS as a National Resource Center. One of the key goals of this grant is to enhance career readiness for students using Southeast Asian languages and area studies expertise, ensuring success in the workplace and meeting national needs.

Key activities within the CAPA initiative include:

  1. Asian Studies Career Readiness Program: Supporting students to pursue postgraduate employment in areas of national need, including Hawai’i-based government jobs, foreign affairs, and overseas positions requiring language and area skills.
  2. ASAN 305 Practicum Course: A course that integrates experiential learning and career readiness curriculum, providing practical career preparation for students.
  3. Graduate Assistant Positions: Funded by NRC to support career-focused initiatives.
  4. CAPA Speaker Series: NRC funding enables the hosting of professionals and alumni to speak on diverse career paths, introducing various opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Additionally, UH CSEAS remains committed to Graduate Education Training for Southeast Asia (GETSEA), supporting graduate education and fostering cross-institutional networks among faculty and students.
