PhD Candidate Opportunity in Language and Society in Southeast Asia at KITLV / KNAW

The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), affiliated with KNAW in Leiden, invites applications for a PhD candidate in Language and Society in Southeast Asia. This role offers an opportunity for those interested in examining language’s role in society, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia.
Research Focus
The selected candidate will develop a research project aligned with their individual research interests, exploring connections such as:
- (Post)colonial legacies and cultural mobilities
- Heritage and politics
- Climate and environmental interactions
Areas of particular interest include Creole languages, historical perspectives, human-environment relations, and the role of language in social change.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field research in Southeast Asia.
- Publish at least two international peer-reviewed journal articles and a PhD dissertation.
- Participate in academic conferences, workshops, and scholarly outreach.
- Engage with the KITLV PhD program and affiliated institutes.
Candidate Requirements
- MA or MPhil in social sciences or humanities with a focus on Southeast Asia.
- Strong academic record and relevant language proficiency in English and a Southeast Asian language.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with excellent organizational skills.
Terms of Employment
- Starting salary: €2,872 per month (increasing to €3,670 by year four).
- Additional benefits include 8% vacation pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet, and pension contributions.
- Flexible working conditions with up to 41 days off per year for full-time staff.

About the KITLV
The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV-KNAW) is an Academy research institute. The KITLV conducts interdisciplinary and comparative historical research. Its research focus is Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, with an emphasis on Indonesia and the ‘Dutch’ Caribbean. It is particularly interested in such issues as state formation, violence and citizenship, processes of mobility and the formation of ethnic and national identity. KITLV is active in the humanities, social sciences and comparative area studies and works closely with Leiden University.
