Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) invites applications for the Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art. This program supports PhD candidates researching the history of U.S. art and visual culture, including Native American art. ACLS encourages applications from diverse perspectives and institutions to enrich humanistic scholarship in traditionally underrepresented areas.

Fellowship Details

  • Stipend: $38,000, plus up to $4,000 for travel and research
  • Tenure: 9–12 continuous months, from July 2025 to May 2027
  • Eligibility: PhD candidates in the U.S. in art history or related fields with a dissertation focused on U.S. visual arts history. Applicants must have completed all PhD requirements except the dissertation.

  • Annotated bibliography: 4 pages of key references
  • Two reference letters (one from dissertation advisor)
  • Institutional statement confirming PhD candidacy, tuition waiver, and access to research resources

Evaluation Criteria

  • Proposal quality in methodology, scope, and theory
  • Potential contribution to American art studies
