Fellowship Overview

Purpose:

  • Funds doctoral or thesis research that advances anthropological knowledge.
  • No restrictions on methodology, location, or topic, but proposals integrating multiple subfields and pioneering new approaches are encouraged.

Award:

  • Maximum amount: $25,000 (nonrenewable).
  • No institutional overhead or administration fees included.
  • No time limit for the grant duration; can fund distinct research phases.

Eligibility:

  • Open to doctoral students of any nationality or institutional affiliation.
  • Applicants must have completed all doctoral degree requirements (except the dissertation) by the project start date.
  • A dissertation advisor must oversee the project.
  • Unsuccessful applicants can reapply with revisions based on feedback.

Application Deadlines:

  • May 1: For project start dates between January 1 and June 30 of the following year.
  • November 1: For project start dates between July 1 and December 31 of the following year.
  • Review process takes 6 months.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Quality and potential contribution to anthropological knowledge.
  • Feasibility of the research plan, evidence collection, and analysis methods.
  • Applicant’s qualifications and how the project aligns with anthropological principles.
  • Proposals on primatology, language structure, or endangered languages must demonstrate broader anthropological relevance.
