Fellowship Overview

Program Overview:

  • Goal: Supports innovative research about art and its histories, fostering collaborations across disciplines. Scholars reside at the Getty Center or Getty Villa.

History:

  • Established: 1985.
  • Scope: Has hosted around 1,300 scholars from over 50 countries.
  • Applications: Receives 300-400 applications per year, awarding around 20 fellowships annually.

Grant Categories:

  1. Scholar Grants: For established researchers with PhDs (held for at least 5 years) or those with substantial professional records.
  2. Postdoctoral Fellowships: For scholars with PhDs awarded within the last 5 years.
  3. Predoctoral Fellowships: For PhD candidates.

Special Focus:

Eligibility:

  • Scholar Grants: PhD must have been awarded before September 1, 2021, or substantial professional experience is required.
  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: For those who received their PhD after September 1, 2021.
  • Predoctoral Fellowships: For PhD candidates.
  • Reapplication: Previous Getty Residential Grant recipients may reapply after a 6-year waiting period.
