Thai Music Ensemble Pau Hana Concert December 2019

UHM Ethnomusicology Ensembles Pau Hana Concert December 2019

Ben Fairfield partnered with UH Choir director, Jace Saplan, and provided the percussion (instruments made in class, of course) for a choral arrangement of “Phu Yai Lee” (A classic Thai protest song from the 1960s that is still played and referenced in today’s Thai political discourse). All the instruments played were made in class, with much of the material scavenged by professor Fairfield himself and even his students. They spent half of the class time learning to construct instruments and half focused on learning to play them, performing at the music department Pau Hana concert at the end of the semester.

Though the remainder of this semester has moved online, the class continues with the hope of the final ‘concert’ being a produced collaborative distanced video performance. Things are still changing continually, and we will keep you updated.

Thai Music ensemble hopes to return in Fall 2020 with the same DIY instrument format.
